 One-On-One Knitting Help

The Tea Cozy has an ongoing Knitting Help Desk. Barbara Ceiga, one of our knitting instructors and stitch sleuth, will help you get back on track. If the problem can’t be sorted out quickly over the phone, you and Barbara will make an appointment to meet either in person at The Tea Cozy or by video chat to solve it and get you back on track.

Fee:  $20 per 30 minutes

 Beginning Knitting Classes

"Taste of Knitting" Series

These classes from Laurel at My Casa Azul are designed to take you from being a brand new knitter all the way to your first sweater! Choose one at a time or check out the Taste of Knitting Bundle for a special price on all four. You can jump in where ever you want to start as long as you have the skills needed. There is no requirement that you take the whole series.

All classes are taught live via Zoom and feature two cameras for clear viewing. You can learn more about the instructor, Laurel Garcia at www.mycasaazul.com and find answers to frequently asked questions.

 

My First Cowl

Learn to knit! (Or refresh your skills). In this class we’ll learn all the knitting basics: casting on, knitting, and purling, binding off plus seaming the finished garment. In three sessions you’ll have your very own chunky cowl and the skills to make more.

This is the first class in the Taste of Knitting Series that takes the new knitter from cowl to sweater. Save $25 when you purchase all four classes together here.

Skills needed: None! This class is for absolute beginners.

Class dates:  Wednesdays, January 4, 11 & 18 from 10 - 11:30 am

 My First Hat in the Round

Knit your first hat! In this class we’ll learn to knit in the round while reviewing all the basics of knitting: casting on, knitting, purling, decreases, binding off and weaving in ends. In two sessions you’ll have a chunky hat to keep you warm.

This is the second class in the Taste of Knitting Series that takes the new knitter from cowl to sweater. Save $25 when you purchase all four classes together here.

Skills Needed:  Basic knowledge of knit and purl stitches, plus casting on and binding off.

       My First Shawl

      The Boneyard Shawl by Stephen West is the perfect next step in your knitting journey. A wonderful first shawl for the beginner knitter or more experienced knitter. You'll be introduced to what gauge means, pattern reading and get lots of practice with the knit and purl stitch. In this class you'll learn Make 1 Left & Right increase stitches, garter tab cast-on and I-cord bind off if you're feeling brave. Plus learn how to fix common knitting mistakes. In 3 sessions, you'll have a gorgeous shawl to wear and lots of knitting confidence.

      This is the third class in the Taste of Knitting Series that takes the new knitter from cowl to sweater. Save $25 when you purchase all four classes together here.

       My First Circular Yoke Sweater

      The Super Simple Summer Sweater is a basic top-down circular yoke pullover by Joji Locatelli. This sweater introduces the new or more experienced knitter to color play, yarn choice and custom sizing. In this class, we'll take a deep dive into gauge swatching to create a fabric you love and what to do if you don't get the pattern's gauge. From there, we’ll breakdown each technique step by step plus learn how to avoid jogs in our stripes. A great first sweater or an opportunity to dive deeper into sweater knitting. 

      This is the fourth class in the Taste of Knitting Series that takes the new knitter from cowl to sweater. Save $25 when you purchase all four classes together here.

      Skills needed:  Solid knowledge of knit and purl stitches, knitting in the round plus casting on and binding off. Familiarity with increases is helpful. 

      Class Dates:  Wednesdays, March 29, April 5 & 19, May 3, 17, 31 from 10:00 - 11:30 am. Note: Class on April 5 is from 10-12pm.

       Taste of Knitting Bundle

      The Taste of Knitting Bundle includes 4 classes that take the knitter from their first stitch to their first sweater. You begin with My First Cowl, then My First Hat to My First Shawl and finally My First Circular Yoke Sweater. The goal with each class is to build confident knitters step by step through each project.

      Class Dates: 

      My First Cowl Class: Wednesdays, January 4, 11, 18 from 10:00 -11:30 am 

      My First Hat Class: Wednesdays, January 25 & February 1 from 10:00 - 11:30 am

      My First Shawl Class: Wednesdays, February 15, March 1 & 15  from 10:00 - 11:30 am

      My First Circular Yoke Sweater Class: Wednesdays, March 29, April 5 & 19, May 3, 17 & 31 from 10:00 - 11:30 am. Note: Class on April 5 is from 10-12pm.

      Fee: $250

      Intermediate Knitting Classes

      Ready for some fun and a few new techniques? Here are some more classes from Laurel to expand your skills and set you up for knitting success.

       

       

      Fidra Hat

      The Fidra Hat is a fun and quick bulky knit. Play with yarn overs, garter and stockinette stitch textures and get a peek into lace knitting. In two sessions you’ll learn the German Twisted Cast On, basic shaping increase and decrease techniques plus how to read a chart. 

      Skills needed: Working knowledge of knit and purl stitches, knitting in the round plus casting on and binding off. Familiarity with KFB (Knit Front and Back) increase stitch, K2Tog (Knit 2 Together) and SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit) decreases helpful but not necessary.

      Class Dates:  Wednesdays, January 4 & 11 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm

       My First Raglan Sweater

      Let’s knit a sweater! Using Brooklyn Tweed’s My First Raglan Sweater pattern, we’ll learn all the important steps in knitting a top-down sweater that fits. In the first class we’ll look at gauge, sizing and how to make basic pattern adjustments. From there, we’ll breakdown each technique step by step to learn German short rows, increases & decreases with ways to track them, tips for knitting sleeves and more.

      Skills needed:  Solid knowledge of knit and purl stitches, knitting in the round plus casting on and binding off. Familiarity with increases is helpful.

      Class Dates:  Sundays, January 8, 15 & 29, February 12, March 5 & 19 from 10:00 - 11:30 am. Please note, class on January 15 is from 10:00 - 12:00 pm

       Sheep Camp Sweater

      Play with color and explore stranded colorwork while knitting this sweater that features a fun, geometric yoke. In this class you’ll learn colorwork knitting techniques, tips on choosing colors and about color dominance plus how to adjust the yoke to get a great fit.  Expand your knitting skills into the world of colorwork sweaters.

      Skills needed:  You have knit a garment or two and are confident with knit and purl stitches, knitting in the round plus casting on and binding off along with beginning experience with colorwork.

      Class Dates:  Sundays Jan 8, 15 & 29, February 12, March 5 & 19 from 1:00 - 2:30 pm

       Rye Socks

      Turn a heel with confidence and knit your own warm socks for winter. In this class you’ll knit a cuff-down sock while learning all the basics of sock knitting that fits your foot! Learn about sizing, turning a heel and the Kitchener stitch to close the toe. At the end of the series, you’ll have one knit sock and the skills to complete the pair.

      Skills needed: Confident with knit & purl stitches, increases & decrease stitches plus knitting in the round. Familiarity with increases, decreases and Short Rows helpful

       Novice Cardigan

      Cardigans are a wonderful layering piece any time of year. Choose from the Chunky or Mohair version of the cardigan. Knit from the top down, this simple knit utilizes easy techniques to produce a stunning sweater.  We’ll begin with yarn selection and knitting a gauge swatch. We’ll then go through each step while learning tips to customize the pattern for a great fit. Whether this is your first cardigan or one of many, it’ll be a great addition to your closet.

      Skills needed:  Firm knowledge of knit and purl stitches, knitting flat plus casting on and binding off stitches. Familiarity with increases is helpful.

      Class Dates:  Wednesdays, January 25, Feb 1 & 15, March 1, 15 & 29 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm
