 One-On-One Knitting Help

The Tea Cozy has an ongoing Knitting Help Desk. Barbara Ceiga, one of our knitting instructors and stitch sleuth, will help you get back on track. If the problem can’t be sorted out quickly over the phone, you and Barbara will make an appointment to meet either in person at The Tea Cozy or by video chat to solve it and get you back on track.

Fee:  $20 per 30 minutes

The World's Simplest Mittens

The World's Simplest Mittens by Tin Can Knits are a fun, fast knit. Choose from fingering, DK, Worsted or Bulky weight yarn and knit toddler to adult size pair of mittens. In this class we'll learn the steps to construct a mitten through increase stitches for the thumb gusset, decreases, putting stitches on hold and picking them back up again. You can work with double pointed needles or magic loop. We'll also discuss gauge and how it impacts the final fit. Learn new skills and/or practice and refresh techniques. A great gift knitting project for yourself and others.

Skills needed:

  • Basic knowledge of knit and purl stitches, Rib Stitch, knitting in the round, casting on and binding off.

Sizing:
toddler (child, adult S, M, L)
fits hand: 5 (6, 7, 7.75, 8.5)” around
mitten length: 7.25 (8.5, 10.5, 12, 13)” from cuff to finger tips (adjustable)
cuff length: 2.5 (2.5, 3, 4, 4)” (adjustable)

Yarn:
fingering weight: 140 (160, 210, 260, 300) yards
DK weight 100 (120, 160, 190, 220) yards
worsted weight: 90 (100, 130, 160, 200) yards
chunky weight: 70 (80, 120, 150, 190) yards

Needles:
fingering: US #0 / 2mm and US #2 / 2.75mm
DK: US #3 / 3.25mm and US #5 / 3.75mm
worsted: US #5 / 3.75mm and US #7 / 4.5mm
chunky: US #6 / 4mm and US #8 / 5mm
DPNs in both sizes or long circulars for magic loop (32"-40") (or as required to meet gauge)

 A Taste of Knitting:

My First Hat in the Round

Knit your first hat! In this class we’ll learn to knit in the round while reviewing all the basics of knitting: casting on, knitting, purling, decreases, binding off and weaving in ends. In two sessions you’ll have a chunky hat to keep you warm.

This is the second class in the Taste of Knitting Series that takes the new knitter from cowl to sweater. Save $25 when you purchase all four classes together here.

Skills Needed: 

  • Basic knowledge of knit and purl stitches, plus casting on and binding off.

Class Dates: 

  • Sundays, Oct 16 & 23 from 10-11:30am

Fee: $50

Materials: 

  • Pattern will be provided
  • 1 skein bulky yarn, light colors are best 
  • US#13, 16″ circular needle 
  • US#13 double point needles 
  • 6-8 jumbo locking stitch markers 
  • Tapestry needle
  • Optional materials: small measuring tape, needle point protectors and scissors

First Colorwork Cowl

Build on your knitting skills and learn how to do stranded colorwork! The First Colorwork Cowl is a great intro to colorwork with easy to knit stranded motifs using only two colors at a time. Learn tips and techniques to make your first time knitting colorwork a success.

Skills needed: Basic knowledge of knit and purl stitches, increases, knitting in the round plus casting on and binding off.

  • First Colorwork Cowl pattern by Jared Flood available on Ravelry or at Brooklyn Tweed
  • 160 yards of Color 1 (Dark)
  • 34 yards of Color 2 (Medium)
  • 59 yards of Color 3 (Light)
  • US#8, 24” circular needles 
  • US#5, 16” circular needles
  • Stitch Marker
  • Tapestry needle
  • Waste yarn (in contrast color from main yarn)
  • Washi tape or small post-it notes
  • Optional materials: small measuring tape, needle point protectors and scissors

Homework: Cast on, work ribbing and knit through Increase Round 1.

Grace Pullover

The Grace pullover is a wonderful winter sweater. This bulky knit uses raglan construction and is worked top down in one piece. A cable panel on the front elevates the sweater without being complicated. In this class you’ll learn how to cable with or without a cable needle, knit sleeves two at a time and make a few adjustments for a great fit.  A lovely project to introduce cabling and to build on your sweater knitting skills.

Skills needed:

  • Have knit at least one garment

Class Dates: 

  • Bonus class to go over yarn, gauge and sizing on Monday, October 24 @ 7pm

  • Grace Pullover pattern by Denise Bayron of Bayron Handmade available on Ravelry or at Bayron Handmade
  • Bulky/Chunky weight yarn in the amount stated for your size in the pattern.
  • US#13, 32” circular needles or size needed to achieve gauge (we’ll go over this in our bonus class)
  • US#11, 32″ circular needles if you want to go down a needle size for the ribbing
  • Shorter circular needles or double pointed needles in the same size as the sweater for sleeves and neck (unless you choose the magic loop technique)
  • Jumbo locking stitch markers, three different colors if possible
  • Crochet needle or stitch fixer
  • Needle point protectors
  • Waste yarn (yarn scrap in a contrasting color than your sweater yarn) or stitch holders
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape

 A Taste of Knitting: 

First Shawl

The Boneyard Shawl by Stephen West is the perfect next step in your knitting journey. A wonderful first shawl for the beginner knitter or more experienced knitter. You'll be introduced to what gauge means, pattern reading and get lots of practice with the knit and purl stitch. In this class you'll learn Make 1 Left & Right increase stitches, garter tab cast-on and I-cord bind off if you're feeling brave. Plus learn how to fix common knitting mistakes. In 3 sessions, you'll have a gorgeous shawl to wear and lots of knitting confidence.

 A Taste of Knitting: 

First Raglan Sweater

Let’s knit a sweater! Using Brooklyn Tweed’s My First Raglan Sweater pattern, we’ll learn all the important steps in knitting a top-down sweater that fits. In the first class we’ll look at gauge, sizing and how to make basic pattern adjustments. From there, we’ll breakdown each technique step by step to learn German short rows, increases & decreases with ways to track them, tips for knitting sleeves and more. You’ll finish this series with a beautiful sweater.

This is the fourth class in the Taste of Knitting Series that takes the new knitter from cowl to sweater. Save $25 when you purchase all four classes together here.

Skills needed:

  • Solid knowledge of knit and purl stitches, knitting in the round plus casting on and binding off. Familiarity with increases is helpful.

Class Dates: 

  • Class: Sundays, January 8, 15 & 29, February 12, March 5 & 19 from 10-11:30am

Fee: $100

Materials: 

  • First Raglan Sweater pattern by Jared Flood available on Ravelry or at Brooklyn Tweed
  • Worsted weight in the amount stated for your size in the pattern.
  • US#7, 16” & 32” circular needles or size needed to achieve gauge (we’ll go over this in our first class)
  • US#5, 16” circular needle
  • US#5 double pointed needles or US#5, 32” or 40” circular needles if you prefer to use magic loop method for the sleeves. If you knit size 1 & 2, you’ll need US#7 double pointed needles as well if that is your preferred method to knit sleeves. 
  • Locking stitch markers, three different colors if possible
  • Crochet needle or stitch fixer
  • Needle point protectors
  • Waste yarn (yarn scrap in a contrasting color than your sweater yarn)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
